ONYRIQ: Closing the Loop of End-of-life Wind Turbines

Onyriq (ONY) is an innovative company dedicated to the development of advanced polymer materials and processes that combine technical performance with industrial feasibility. With over 15 years of experience, the ONY team has cultivated a deep understanding of how polymeric structures define the physical and chemical properties of materials. This expertise allows them to design and synthesize tailor-made polymers that not only meet the technical demands of industry but also anticipate market needs and sustainability challenges.

At the heart of ONY’s innovation is LOOP technology, which is a depolymerisable epoxy system that represents a major step forward in sustainable materials science. Unlike conventional thermosets, which are difficult to recycle, LOOP technology enables the recovery of reactive building blocks. These recovered components can then be used to produce new thermoset materials, either in a closed loop, where materials are recycled back into the same application, or in an open loop, where they are reused in other industries. This versatility provides a practical and scalable path toward circular material use.

Within the ECORES-WIND project, ONY plays a central role as a materials developer. Their task is to adapt and optimize LOOP technology specifically for the wind turbine blade sector. This involves designing new resin compositions that not only meet the stringent processing requirements of blade manufacturing but also deliver the durability and performance necessary for turbines to operate efficiently throughout their lifespan.

Perhaps most importantly, ONY’s work ensures that, once a wind turbine blade reaches the end of its use life, its composite materials can be chemically recycled. Instead of becoming waste, the resins can be broken down into their building blocks and repurposed, giving the blades and their materials a second life.

Through its contributions, Onyriq embodies the mission of ECORES-WIND: to advance material technologies that make renewable energy infrastructure itself more circular and thus sustainable.
